Dental implants are composed of two things, the implant is the titanium post and the other part is restoration such as a crown. This is a procedure that Dr. Moon at our clinic situated at Crystal Lake, Illinois, may present as an option when there are missing teeth. In surgery, the post is fixed in the jaw so that it can then act as the root, while the crown or restoration acts to replace the tooth. As the post fuses, this is permanent and becomes like your other teeth.
The whole procedure will take more than one visit, and does involve surgery and some healing time. Essentially once the titanium post is put into the tooth socket that is missing, the patient then has to spend 11/2 to 3 months healing. As the bone grows around it this part is now anchored. Next, a smaller post, an abutment or connector post gets fixed on. This will be what holds the tooth. You will give teeth impressions so a model can be made and then the restoration is done and it is secured on.
